Fall Scholarship and Stipend Taxes: Records to Save
Prepare scholarship and stipend records for 2026 taxes. Separate tuition support, living expenses, and payments for services before tax forms arrive.

Scholarship and stipend taxes are easier to review when you keep the award terms alongside the payment history. A fall award can cover tuition, living costs, or services, and those categories require different questions. Save the records now rather than trying to reconstruct the arrangement in filing season.
Read the award conditions
IRS scholarship guidance distinguishes qualifying education expenses for degree candidates from items such as room and board. Payments required for teaching, research, or other services are generally taxable, subject to specific exceptions. The name “stipend” does not settle which category a payment belongs to.
Read the award letter and mark the expense categories it permits. Save the university account statement showing where the award was applied. If part went directly to tuition and part was paid to your bank, retain both records; a single bank deposit does not explain the full award.
Create a short award worksheet
Use one row per award rather than combining every university payment. Record the payer, payment date, amount, restrictions, and any service requirement. Add a question column for anything the letter does not explain. Send those questions to the administering office while the award details are still familiar.
- Keep required books and equipment receipts.
- Save the contract for any assistantship duties.
- Ask which year-end income forms the payer expects to issue.
Match the paperwork before filing
Form 1042-S reports certain U.S.-source amounts paid to foreign persons, including income that can be exempt under a treaty. If you receive one, keep it with the corresponding award record. A tax form should be reconciled with the arrangement and other documents rather than assumed to describe every payment from the school.
Frequently asked question
Is a living-expense scholarship automatically tax free? No. Room and board generally are not qualifying expenses for the scholarship exclusion. Treaty eligibility and other facts may affect the final treatment.
What to do next
Build the award worksheet and ask the scholarship office to explain any unclear payment before year-end.
