Questions students ask
How do I contact TaxCurb?
Email rojan@taxcurb.net or sanjog@taxcurb.net.
Where should I start?
Open the tutorial or a tax tool. Sign in when you are ready to prepare forms.
Are the tax tools a tax determination?
No. They are educational estimates for tax year 2026.
What does this calculator estimate?
It estimates vehicle loan interest for tax year 2026 from the purchase price, loan, and use details you enter. It does not decide that a deduction applies to your return.
Which tax year does it use?
This calculator is locked to tax year 2026. A purchase date may be from January 1, 2025 through December 31, 2026.
Is the result a tax determination?
No. It is an educational estimate. A qualifying vehicle, personal use, and your full return can all change the answer.
Does my F-1 visa mean I am a nonresident?
No. Visa status and tax residency are different. Days, exempt-individual limits, a green card, and a treaty can all change the answer.
Why does an F, J, M, or Q year come back as needs review?
Student and teacher days are not counted automatically. Exempt-individual treatment has time limits, and Form 8843 is part of that check.
What if I changed status during the year?
A change of status, a partial year, or missing prior-year days stays in review. The tool will not turn those facts into a yes or no.
What does the weighted total mean?
All of the current-year countable days, one-third of the prior year, and one-sixth of the year before that. Both the 31-day and 183-day conditions have to appear met.
I am on F-1. Why is there no yes or no?
Student days may be excluded, but only after exempt-individual eligibility and the year limit are checked. This page will not make that decision for you.
Does meeting 183 days make me a resident?
Not by itself. A closer connection, a treaty, or another exception can still change residency.
I had no income. Do I still file something?
You might. Form 8843 is not the same as an income tax return. Students and exchange visitors often file Form 8843 even with no wages.
Tax was withheld from a scholarship or paycheck. Should I file?
Filing may be useful to claim withholding back. That is separate from whether a return is required, and it is not a promise of a refund.
I worked in two states. Can this page pick the forms?
No. More than one state, contract income, or investment sales stays in review so you can go through the full intake.
Why does the tool ask where I lived before the United States?
Student provisions usually look at tax residence immediately before arrival. Citizenship, or a third country, is a different question.
The page found an article reference. Do I qualify?
No. The label is “possible provision to review.” Time limits, earlier claims, and the saving clause still have to be checked.
My country is missing. Does that mean there is no treaty?
It means this tool’s table has no matching student provision. It is not a conclusion that no benefit of any kind exists. Use the IRS treaty tables.
I am on F-1. Is FICA always refundable?
No. The exception looks at nonresident tax status and whether the services fit the visa purpose. A resident alien, or work that does not qualify, is not given a refund figure here.
Can I get this back by filing a tax return?
Not always. The usual first step is to ask the employer to correct the withholding. A Form 1040-NR does not recover every kind of payroll tax.
I do not have a W-2 yet. Can I still estimate?
Yes, from wages, for a tax year whose employee rates and wage base are loaded. The result says that payroll can differ from that estimate.
Should I upload my W-2 here?
No. This page only builds a list. Upload happens after you sign in, in the secure filing flow.
I never received a 1099. Do I still need it?
Only if the payer issued one. Ask the bank, school, employer, or broker. Marking a form unavailable leaves the checklist incomplete rather than pretending it is required.
I had no job. Is the list empty?
It should still mention Form 8843 if you are a student or exchange visitor. No income does not automatically mean no filing.
