2027 F-1 Tax Filing Calendar: Which Deadline Applies?
A 2027 planning guide for 2026 F-1 tax-year filings: 1040-NR wage filers, stand-alone Form 8843, and extensions.
The 2027 filing season covers 2026 income. The commonly quoted April 15 and June 15 dates apply to different nonresident situations. Determine your filing requirement first, then use the final 2026 tax-year IRS instructions to confirm the date before relying on any calendar article.
April 15: ordinary wage-withholding rule
The current Form 1040-NR instructions say a calendar-year nonresident employee who received wages subject to U.S. income tax withholding generally files by the 15th day of the fourth month after year-end. For the 2026 calendar tax year, that points to April 15, 2027, subject to final IRS instructions and any holiday or disaster relief.
This category often includes F-1 students with a W-2 and federal income tax withheld. Check your own facts; a W-2 alone does not answer every residency or deadline question.
June 15: some nonwage and Form 8843 situations
The Form 1040-NR instructions provide the 15th day of the sixth month for a calendar-year filer who did not receive wages as an employee subject to U.S. withholding. IRS training material uses June 15, 2027, for a 2026 no-income student’s stand-alone Form 8843. If Form 8843 is attached to an income tax return, follow that return’s applicable due date.
Do not assume every F-1 student has the same June deadline. A wage filer may have the earlier date, and state returns can have different deadlines.
Extensions do not extend payment
Form 4868 can provide additional time to file a qualifying federal return when requested by its original due date. Any estimated tax due should still be paid by the original payment deadline. State extension and payment rules require a separate check.
As of October 2026, verify the final 2026 Form 8843, Form 1040-NR, and Form 4868 instructions before filing. Save any extension confirmation with the return.
What to do next
Use the dates as a planning map, then confirm the deadline tied to your exact return, wages, and tax year.
