Form 8843 for F-1 Students: Filing Steps and 2027 Timing
Who files Form 8843, how it connects to Form 1040-NR, and how to confirm the stand-alone 2027 due date.
Form 8843 documents why eligible F-1 student days are excluded from the substantial presence test. The word “exempt” on the form refers to counting days for tax residency; it does not mean all income is tax free. An eligible student can have a Form 8843 filing obligation even in a year with no income.
Decide whether the form applies
Check your visa history, the calendar years in which you were present in the United States, and whether you qualify as an exempt individual student for the year. Most eligible F-1 students in their first five calendar years must complete Form 8843 to explain excluded days. Prior F, J, M, or Q years can affect the analysis.
If you also have income subject to U.S. tax, review whether to file Form 1040-NR and attach Form 8843. If no income tax return is required, the form can generally be mailed by itself under its instructions.
Gather the information before filling it out
Keep your passport, visa, I-20, arrival and departure dates, school name and address, and prior-year visa history nearby. Complete the parts that apply to your status and answer every required question accurately. A school registration record is not a substitute for sending the IRS Form 8843.
Sign and keep a copy of any stand-alone form. Use the address printed in the final instructions for the year being filed, not an address copied from an old blog post.
Check the 2027 deadline
For the 2026 tax year, current IRS training material identifies June 15, 2027, as the due date in a no-income, stand-alone Form 8843 example. The published Form 8843 instructions tie a stand-alone filing to the applicable Form 1040-NR due date. If you have wages subject to withholding and a 1040-NR filing requirement, the ordinary earlier federal return due date may apply.
As of October 2026, confirm the final 2026 Form 8843 and 1040-NR instructions before filing; holidays, extensions, and special relief can change a deadline.
What to do next
Work out whether Form 8843 accompanies a return or stands alone, then use the final IRS instructions for the exact filing year.
