F-1 OPT Taxes: A 2027 Filing Guide for International Students

How F-1 students on OPT review 2026 wages, federal tax residency, FICA withholding, and state returns for the 2027 filing season.

Working on Optional Practical Training (OPT) usually means you have wages to review for income tax. It does not automatically mean Social Security and Medicare taxes should be withheld. The answer depends on your tax residency and whether the work meets the applicable visa and authorization rules.

Income tax still applies to taxable pay

An OPT job can produce a W-2 showing wages and federal income tax withholding. A nonresident generally reports taxable U.S. wages on Form 1040-NR if filing is required; a resident for tax purposes generally uses Form 1040. Tax withholding on a paycheck is an advance payment and can differ from final tax.

Keep your employment authorization, pay statements, and W-2. If a treaty may cover part of your compensation, obtain the precise treaty article and any Form 1042-S that was issued.

FICA is a separate question

The IRS states that authorized employment, including OPT or CPT, by qualifying nonresident F-1 students may be exempt from Social Security and Medicare taxes. Once a student becomes a resident alien for tax purposes, the nonresident visa-based exception generally ends, even if the F-1 immigration classification continues.

Inspect W-2 boxes 4 and 6 for Social Security and Medicare withholding. If withholding appears incorrect, contact payroll first. The IRS explains how to claim a refund if the employer cannot correct it. See our FICA refund guide.

Do not skip state taxes

States apply their own residency and income rules. Federal nonresident status does not automatically determine state residency. If you worked remotely or moved during OPT, check each relevant state’s filing rules and your W-2 state wage boxes.

Prepare for the 2027 filing season

For a 2026 tax return filed in 2027, save every 2026 W-2 and 1042-S, confirm your entry and exit dates, and review whether you still qualify to exclude F-1 student days from the substantial presence test. Do not assume OPT changes tax residency by itself. Check the final IRS instructions for 2026 returns before relying on a filing date or form revision. Our 2027 tax deadline calendar explains the usual April and June timing.

What to do next

Review federal residency, W-2 wages, treaty documents, and FICA withholding separately before filing.
